Like many women in this day and age, we have embraced the trend of building lean muscle to defy aging and let’s face it, keep up with our pace of life. Social Media is laden with influencers, some more qualified than others, that are eager to share their journeys, products, success and strategies for achieving these common goals.
As an executive in Healthcare, wellness is just part of the unspoken job requirement. Do I do it perfectly, NO WAY – but through tracking my calories, hitting my protein goals, and even getting my bloodwork done regularly, I still fall victim to trends. The most dangerous trend is feeling like you have to over-consume to get results.
Over-consume information, over-consume changing trends, over-consume new products, over-consume convenience…while knowledge and enlightenment are good, nothing is more valuable than the validity of an expert’s credentials.
Our bodies are such a gift to us and if we don’t invest correctly into it, we will cause more harm than good.
So back to my failure:
Despite my best efforts in health, something still felt off. My body was sending warning signs, and I ignored them. Dark circles under my eyes, unexplained weight gain despite a calorie deficit, and persistent fluid retention.
I did the craziest thing…I asked my doctor for help. Sure, sure, one of my doctors is my husband and as convenient as that is, I am also a personality type that will delay asking for help until I break. Am I alone here?
When my husband asked for a breakdown of what I was consuming, it took him all of 2.5 seconds to deduce my saboteur.
Sodium. The one thing I wasn’t paying close attention to in all my data and tracking. I had one eye on calories and one eye on protein, but sodium? *face smack*
Determined to find out if excess sodium was sabotaging my health, I committed to a sodium fast. What I discovered along the way changed my perspective forever. Not only did I uncover the hidden dangers in my ‘healthy’ choices, but I also realized that this wasn’t just a short-term experiment—this was the beginning of a lifestyle transformation.
Day One: The Enlightenment
Starting this journey felt empowering. For the first time, I had a game plan that put me in control. My goal was simple—cut sodium drastically for five days and see if it was truly the culprit behind my issues. I felt optimistic and determined, ready to uncover the truth.
Day Two: The Purge
I dove straight into my fridge and pantry, inspecting every label. If a product had more than 140mg of sodium per serving, it had to go. What shocked me most was how many ‘healthy’ options—especially the ones I bought for my kids—were loaded with sodium. I always checked for sugar and protein, but I had completely overlooked this sneaky enemy. Seeing how much sodium had infiltrated our everyday food choices was an eye-opener.
Day Three: The Detox Begins
My body was already reacting. I expected cravings, but what I didn’t expect was how thirsty I felt. My body had been holding onto excess fluid for so long that, without the extra sodium, it started flushing everything out. I had to drink a ton of water to compensate. That night, I slept better—deeper and more restful than I had in months.
Day Four: Research & Retraining
Taking my daily sodium consumption down to 200mg per day was not going to be easy. So, I turned to research. I started looking for brand-name products that fit into my family’s lifestyle without compromising on flavor or convenience. I realized that making this sustainable was more than just eliminating sodium—it was about finding balance in every nutrient. If we fixate only on low sugar but ignore salt, or prioritize high protein but overlook saturated fat, we’re setting ourselves up for chronic disease. Comprehensive label reading became my new non-negotiable.
Day Five: Small Changes, Big Results
Just the awareness alone changed how I ate. I naturally avoided high-sodium foods without feeling deprived. I noticed my rings fit looser, and the swelling in my face started going down. It was subtle but undeniable—my body was responding to the change.
Day Six: The Proof Was in the Mirror
I stepped on the scale. Down 6 pounds. Without changing my workouts, without cutting calories—just by reducing sodium. My dark circles were less noticeable, my skin looked brighter, and my clothes fit better. It was clear: sodium had been silently sabotaging my progress.
Day Seven: The Shopping Mission
Determined to make this sustainable, I hit the grocery stores and curated a list of the best high-protein, low-sodium foods available at HEB, Kroger, Sprouts, and Whole Foods. I refused to compromise on health, and I wasn’t going to let my family fall back into old habits either.
Today: Empowerment & Commitment
This wasn’t a fast anymore. This was my new normal. I felt better than I had in years, and I knew there was no going back. The food industry thrives on convenience over health, and I refuse to let my family be a part of that statistic.
Lesson learned: I will never forget the basics of health despite the noise on social media. This is about sustainability, not restriction. It’s about making intentional choices that support all of our organs, not just our physique.
I’m eager to take you on this journey with me. If you’re ready to take control of your health, I challenge you to do a 5-day sodium fast and see what you discover. You get 2 less days than me, because I am giving you all the tools you need. Let’s build a life of balance, awareness, and longevity—together. 💪🧂🚫
